![]() That's not to say the campaign doesn't have some interesting ideas. While Killzone: Shadow Fall is largely linear, there are some hub-like stages that have you complete objectives on the fringes before returning back, and will more often than not needlessly plant troops in your way upon returning, making you feel like you're fighting more than you should. Two particular moments are moving energy pods to open doors and power generators, while another is navigating thin, suspended ledges connected by countless ladders, both of which slow the pace considerably and are clunky to interact with in first-person. Times when it attempts to add variation, it simply comes across as fiddly. It's all rather bland, which is a shame because the moment-to-moment combat would be enjoyable if implemented in interesting ways, since the controls have a solid heft and weight to them, while its roster of weapons are generic but feel pleasing to aim and fire. Killzone: Shadow Fall's multiplayer just about makes it a PS4 launch title worth investigating, and its campaign is either entirely competent, and at the worst very frustrating. There are sections where you must attach C4 to an enemy structure, clear rooms and secure hostages, hold back waves of enemies, and retreat to safety while you move like treacle after becoming caught in an explosion. When Killzone: Shadow Fall isn't being frustrating, it's simply playing it safe with tried-and-tested scenarios we've seen a dozen times in other games, stringing out missions to the point where they become boring. You could argue that games shouldn't hold you by the hand – and we'd usually agree – but sometimes not only is it very difficult to find the passage or doorway onwards, at others when you do try and explore, seemingly reachable destinations will instantly kill you upon touching, even if it looks as if it could be the route forward, or hide one of the game's many hidden collectables. When you need a waypoint – which is more often than not – then it's rarely displayed on the screen, so you have to tap Up on the D-pad on a regular basis, which is annoying. The direction of an objective is often tricky to determine, with waypoints pointing to eventual destinations, as opposed to immediate doorways or passages that would more neatly show the way. There are many problems with Killzone: Shadow Fall's campaign, and general navigation is one of them. Those stunning vistas turn to generic industrial corridors in the campaign's latter parts, and the initially intriguing premise of a world split into two warring factions is represented by lacklustre dialogue and padded-out mission design. Unfortunately, this warm, fuzzy feeling fades away the further you play the campaign. It looks gorgeous, with jaw-dropping vistas of imposing futuristic cities complete with blinding lights and grungy details, and superb facial animation that really gives the feeling that you're really being ushered into a new generation. Killzone: Shadow Fall gives a very good first impression.
